Magic Leap Finally Reveals a Product

Magic Leap Creator Edition is the first product revealed from the ultra stealthy augmented reality startup. So far, the device looks like a direct competitor to Microsoft's Hololens and the Meta2.

Founded in 2011, Magic Leap, the Florida-based startup is developing augmented reality technology to change the way humans interact with technology. Over the years, the company has released a few stunning demo videos, an obscure TED Talk, and raised billions of dollars in funding.

Now Magic Leap has finally released a product, Magic Leap One.

According to the company, "We're adding another dimension to computing. Where digital respects the physical. And they work together to make life better. Magic Leap One is built for creators who want to change how we experience the world."

Magic Leap One appears to be a headset device, wired to a processing unit that is clipped to the user's belt, and controlled with the aid of a hand controller, not unlike Google's Daydream system, although much bulkier.

According to the company website, the images shown may not reflect the actual shipped product, but the device features an integrated processing unit dedicated to high-fidelity, gaming-quality graphics, with the power and performance of a laptop computer. "From editing an elaborate 3D model to playing a first-person shooter in your living room, Magic Leap One produces lightfield objects in intricate detail, all on a highly responsive, self-contained wearable."

We live and think in a 3D world, not on a flat screen. Our spatial interface includes multiple input modes including voice, gesture, head pose and eye tracking. This collective input system provides the tools needed to break free from outdated conventions of point and click interfaces, delivering a more natural and intuitive way to interact with technology.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the company said users will be able to purchase subscription lenses and the headset itself will come in two sizes.

From the development side, Magic Leap is highlighting their platform’s ability. A Creator Portal will be coming in “early 2018” that should give developers more to work with including documentation, tools and resources.

Since it has taken so long, it is easy to be skeptical that Magic Leap's technology can live up to the hype. Will it power the a new generation of computing, or become another Google Glass?

We’ll find out more, including pricing in 2018 when the device ships.
